What is QUEST?
QUEST is a selection of online and kinaesthetic resources that trains teachers and learners in asking and answering guided, structured questions to unlock existing thoughts and knowledge. The goal of QUEST is that the teachers’ and learners’ reliance on these resources becomes less and less, creating autonomous, high order thinking individuals, who can confidently discuss any subject and come to solid, justifiable and reasoned answers.
The four phases of using the QUEST resources are:
1. QUEST trails – this resource is based on line (although can be printed) and guides teachers to create a well-structured questioning trails for learners to follow, discuss and answer. This trail also trains the learners in the key concepts of QUEST (structured questioning by using different levels of active verbs).
2. QUEST card activities including the QUEST board game – these easy to download, printable, resources build on the learners skills learnt in using the QUEST trails. Students select active verbs and stem sentences from the structured levels to create starts to higher order thinking questions. The activities engage all learners in stretching and challenging discussions.
3. QUEST prompts (Dice, Posters) – these are the final stages of building towards the autonomous learner and gives students a selection of resources that prompt and stimulate learners into asking and answering structured higher order thinking questions which facilitate discussion and lots of progress.
4. Removal of all QUEST resources – now just ask your students to discuss a topic. Students will now be able to build their discussion, through questioning, to higher order thinking; engaging, stretching and challenging each other to make fast and excellent progress. Students will also be able to make their own QUEST trails and other QUEST card activities for other learners – thus making the teachers job easier for next year!
